3/9/2010 3:44:00 AM - Cosplay Ethics? While Idaho may not be world renowned for cosplay, they do know good spuds when they see them. As a result, the University of Idaho has a thoughtful post about the ethics of cosplay. We don't normally post links to sites with no costume photos, but we'll make an exception for this. Schoolgirl Becomes Idol in Japan
2/8/2010 -Rebecca Flint, 14 – aka Beckii Cruel – is an internet hit among anime fans and her debut album is tipped to top Japanese charts. Like most 14-year-old girls, Rebecca Flint likes to dress up and dance. But unlike most girls, she records and posts her performances on YouTube. Beckii's idea to film herself in "cosplay" – derived from costume play – followed and an internet star was born. Hundreds of thousands of Japanese teenagers indulge in "cosplay", with conventions regularly held around the country.continue reading at The Observer...
Disney DIY princesses
1/28/2010 -There's no such thing as a "free" hobby — unless you're into collecting twigs and sticks, that is. This is what makes the do-it-yourself (DIY) culture so great because it lessens the burden on your pocket. The flipside is that you will have to compensate with more effort and time — important elements which will determine the outcome of your DIY creations. continue reading at The Malay Mail...
Cosplay Trooper is Otacool
2/9/2010 -Danny Choo is also widely known as the "dancing storm trooper." He wanders around Tokyo dressed as a soldier from George Lucas' "Star Wars" saga, in pursuit of his goal: "to recruit a new Imperial army," taking pictures of himself on trains packed with salarymen or being served at maid-themed coffee shops. His dancing storm trooper has attracted thousands of viewers on YouTube.
Featured on CNN and the BBC, Choo has become a missionary of Japanese pop culture. He recently published Otacool - Worldwide Otaku Rooms a book about otaku (geeks) and the rooms they have turned into shrines for the characters they love.

Evansville Con Humble Beginnings
2/12/2010 -When walking around downtown Evansville there are a few things that you can expect to see: people getting coffee at Penny Lane, a few businessmen and women grabbing some lunch at the Peephole and a person or two stumbling out of Hammerheads after a bad (or good depending on how you look at it) night. But someone dressed from head to toe in an elaborate Japanese anime costume? continue reading.
Asia's Fabric Markets Unraveled
1/25/2010 -Cute cottons and sumptuous silks at wholesale prices: Fabric markets are a home sewer’s paradise. Sewing is not just for little old ladies. Like many young people in Asia, I love to make flamboyant cosplay and club outfits from scratch. My first stop for materials: The nearest fabric market. There’s no better place to pick up novelty prints and faux fur trims at bargain prices.

Fire Ball Fashions: Steampunk
1/24/2010 -Steampunk has been building in popularity over the last few years. The general concept is a "what if...?" world where the main source of energy for powering technology is, obviously, steam. The second important component in steampunk technology is gears. The genre tends to be steeped in neo-19th century Victorian fashion and is often modded out with the mechanics of the age. The gadgetry takes inspiration from what was imagined in the literature of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells. Continue reading at dane101.com...

Morning Musume
11/14/2009 -What could be better than having breakfast with the girls from Morning Musume? How about getting to share an interview with their fans here on the Lab? Thanks to our West Coast connection for their diligence in putting it together. Great Job!
11/2/2009 7:25:00 PM - Cosplayers open famous London crossing
November 2nd was an exciting day for London, as its famous Oxford Circus crossing was re-opened with a new design. Based on the Shibuya crossing in Tokyo, the new design allows pedestrians to cross the street diagonally, getting rid of the typical people-crush many tourists experience when they visit the landmark.
A team of British cosplayers were asked to take part in the official opening ceremony - characters including Sailor Moon, Mio and Sheryl Nome pulled a giant red ribbon in the shape of an 'X' over the crossing to mark the occasion.
The event was accompanied by the sound of taiko drums from famous Japanese musician Joji Hirota, and the mayor of London, Boris Johnson, banged a giant gong to open the crossing.
In a country where cosplay is mostly unknown by the wider public, this was a landmark occasion for UK cosplayers.
The ceremony was organised by Westminster Council, Cross Media and the Grand Cosplay Ball. The Grand Cosplay Ball is an international cosplay event taking place in London on November 29th.
The Third Colossus by Isaac Jones
11/1/2009 -It's a rare treat to find a character that isn't often cosplayed. Take this amazing costume creation from Shadow of the Colossus by Isaac Jones. Of course, having a great costume is just the beginning. Incorporating different camera angles and lighting can really capture the creative energy. Hope this give you some inspiration.
Tsunku Goes Beyond Rhythm Heaven
10/28/2009 -Hello! Project's producer Tsunku already has quite a following when it comes to household names like Morning Musume in Japan. But his efforts have extended to another popular music-themed genre of gaming entitled Rhythm Heaven which I found addictive even before it arrived in the States. The Lab's West Coast crew were a part of a select group of folks present during this summer's Anime Expo anime convention when Tsunku shared his thoughts with us. Enjoy!
