Celebrating its third year, AFO steps up to the challenge of delivering a number of things to anime fans from around the country:

  • Florida's first Japanese Guest - Hiroshi Aro
  • Father of American manga - Ben Dunn was also a special guest
  • Steve Bennett, Wendee Lee, Jan Scott Frazier and many others also were guests
  • Florida's largest Anime Dealer Room - 22 in total
  • 55 hours of non-stop AFO TV - including all 25 episodes of X TV series
  • Separate Cosplay and Costume contests - first to offer online pre-registation for contests
  • More Pocky than you know what to do with
The very rare Fred Leggett Collectors Plushie

WIth the explosive growth of anime in Florida, it's no wonder AFO staff were kept busy answering the call of duty. Hundreds of fans (around 1,800 at last count ) squeezed in to watch the AMV shows, Cosplay contests, and dozens of panels ranging from Steve Bennett to Wendee Lee and J-Rock to Para Para. Though there were technical issues at nearly every turn with live video feeds to backstage contestants, and setup issues that kept things from starting and ending on time, there was much entertainment to be had. The non-stop video gaming room offered a cool break from the heat of the mammoth dealer room that zapped over $100 from my piggy bank.

Speaking of money, one of the best things about AFO is that you get the most bang for your buck, less than $10 per day to get access to tons of things. Personally, I hung out in the cosplay and costuming workshops where we learned tips and tricks for stage presentation and working with difficult costumes. Very informative - thanks to Susan and Joe as well as Heidi and Diane. Had I not been at the cosplay panel, I wouldn't have won an award for our skit because I decided to change it the day of the contest. "Keep them wanting more by making it shorter than you think it should be". I'm just glad we got it done since our costumes weren't finished in time for JACON.
