12. Ayanami Rei - Plugsuit Cosplay

Category: Anime

Completed: 100%

Cost: $ US180

Hours to Make: 80-100

First worn at: MegaCon '05

Inspiration: I first wanted to cosplay her because I look like her (well, I'm fairly scrawny, haha) and her light blue hair just...appeals to me for some reason. I have always loved her plugsuit too, and wanted to make it! Eventually, I got into the series and started to really love the character, and this cosplay has made me start to make more Rei costumes.

Favorite Aspect: Everything...I just love it! I can really fit into this character in so many ways, plus I got to represent her for the Human Chess Match at Metrocon's 2005 event. It's funny how many people in Florida now recognize me because of this costume! I really enjoy portraying her character.

Least Favorite Aspect: Wow...Looking back there are lots of things I could improve on, like making it tighter and also not using paint for the effects, as well as a different fabric choice. It makes for a lot of regrets, though I certainly cannot say I hate this costume! But I do plan on doing a complete remake one of these days, since at the time I was such a newbie.

Easiest Task: Pulling off a character who is nine years my junior. But otherwise, styling and dying the wig. Though it definately wasn't the EASIEST wig I've ever worked on, it was simple compared to the bodysuit.

Hardest Task: First off, making it from an actual bodysuit that I used as a pattern with some alterations since I could NOT find a paper pattern. However, symmetry actually was the hardest part, since you basically have to make sure everything on one side looks the same as everything on the *other* side. Not to mention, I had to pay attention to each and every detail and make things appear the way I see it in pics and the anime/manga. And it was odd having to wear it while making markings on the costume so things would line up right when on my body, but since it's a stretchy fabric it was the only safe way to do that...things turned out okay in the end.
